VICTORIA Chitepo Provincial Hospital in Mutare was a hive of activity last Saturday when the 6th edition of the Derma-surgical mobile clinic came to offer free dermatological and surgical services.
Organised by the Bulawayo based non-profit making organisation, Noble Hands Zimbabwe, in partnership with Global Cleft Foundation, specialist dermatologist Dr Donald Mutangadura, the Ministry of Health and Child Care and other stakeholders, the outreach ran under the theme, “Albinism Konnect: Vikela (prevent) skin cancer.”
During the outreach 178 beneficiaries received free dermatological and surgical services. Musiyarira said the PWA came from all over Manicaland. “Eight major surgical operations were done sending patients smiling and mental health support services were also offered to all beneficiaries. Each beneficiary got three sunscreen lotions, two lip balms and a sunhat. There was also transport reimbursement to all beneficiaries and lunch was provided since the outreach ran throughout the day,” he said.
The reigning Mr Beauty with Albinism Botswana, Mareko Sekgopr, who attended the outreach said a lot of people with albinism are succumbing to skin cancer every month because they cannot afford sunscreen lotions, especially those living in rural areas.
“I have noticed that a lot of our people with albinism, even in Botswana, are not employed because of their volatile condition and stigma in some cases, so they are not economically empowered and will not be able to consistently afford sunscreen lotion which goes for US$15 to US$30 per tube, lasting a month,” said Sekgopr who is currently doing a two-years Chaplaincy course at Mutare School of Preaching in Dangamvura.
Sekgopr who won the crown November last year at their national pageant held in Gaborone said he was impressed by the outreach and will take a leaf from Zimbabwe to improve on similar mobile outreaches in his home country.
