THE maxim one good turn deserves another was shown over the Easter Holiday by Mutare based gospel diva Dorcas Moyo who donated various items to Victoria Chitepo Hospital and to Zororai Old Peoples Home.

The donation by the ‘Mhanza Haisekwe’ star comes just after she was gifted a 2025 Toyota Fortuner 2.4 GD6 and US$20 000 early this month by controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo, who said the vehicle was in recognition of her contributions to growing Zimbabwe’s gospel music.

It was also meant to cushion the harsh backlash criticism she faced on social media over a post she wrote concerning the March 31 national shutdown protests called for by war veteran and former Zanu-PF Central committee member Blessed Runesu Geza.

At Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital the donations valued at US$2000 comprising of 50 blankets, cover beds and mosquito nets were for the hospital’s pre-mature unit.  There was also 50kg of beef meat donated for all the patients to eat during the Easter Holiday.

Like she sang in her 2023 song  ‘Inyasha’ featuring Minister Moment, the song speaks prophetically about the blessings coming her way of late in her career as a gospel musician. She said that is why she always gives back through her Dorcas Moyo Foundation when she also receives showers of blessings in her life.

“As a mother I know what women go through, especially when one has a pre-term baby. This is why we decided to donate to the hospital’s premature unit. I am grateful for God’s grace in life as a gospel musician and this is why I give back to others when I’m also blessed. I started with Manicaland because this is my home province and where my biggest fan base is,” said Moyo during the handover last Friday.

Victoria Chitepo Hospital matron Rachael Magutsa thanked the musician for donating to the hospital which she said is often busy as Manicaland’s main referral hospital.

“We thank you for realizing and recognizing that we have a special care baby unit where mothers and pre-term babies are admitted. Currently it is full to the brim. Remember we are approaching winter season and these blankets will really come in handy. We admit severely pre-term babies and the survival rate is very high. At the moment we have 45 beds which is beyond our bed capacity of 42,” said matron Magutsa.

Adding to their appreciation the hospital’s food services supervisor Carlos Sanyanga said the timing on Easter Holiday was great to give patients a hearty meal during the holiday.

“During this period of the Easter Holiday the patients will really appreciate this beef donation. We have a 250 bed capacity but this can exceed sometimes. At peak we need 40kgs of beef a day so we are grateful for this donation during Easter,” said Sanyanga.

At Zororai Old People’s Home in Sakubva, Moyo said this was a fulfillment of their promise when they came to visit and donated groceries again last year in October. They donated goods valued at US$500 which included blankets for all the 11 elderly currently housed there as well as basic groceries and other essentials including 10kgs of beef.

“We came here in October last year and donated groceries again, but had promised to come back in December. We failed to come due to work commitments but now we have come to fulfill our promise during this Easter Holiday. We are remembering you our elderly parents here and we will continue to come and assist when we can as we have learnt there are a lot of things you need support to remain sustainable,” said Moyo.

Zororai Old Peoples Home administrator Nyasha Mukosera thanked Moyo and also implored for more support from the community citing that there is no sole financier for the home to remain functional.

“This year we are celebrating 50 years as a community based private voluntary organization that takes care of the elderly over the years of 65. We currently have 11 elderly housed here, six males and five females. They all come here through the Department of Social Welfare after assessing their vulnerability,” said Mukosera.

She mentioned several areas of need, especially the burial service costs, given that most of the elderly who come there have no families and no funeral insurance, as well as the need to upgrade some of their dilapidated infrastructure at the centre amongst other welfare needs for the residents and voluntary caretakers there.

Moyo’s manager Peter Madondo echoed the sentiments that a good turn deserves another. He added that they will continue with their philanthropic deeds as the Dorcas Moyo Foundation whenever they can. Madondo hinted that a new album is set for September and they are excited about their upcoming debut shows in Dubai and the United States of America in May and June respectively.

“We have been to the UK (United Kingdom) twice in the past two years and have performed regionally in South Africa, Botswana and Mozambique, but we are set to tour Dubai and the United States for the first time, so it’s really exciting times ahead that we are grateful to God for,” said Madondo.

Moyo is also riding high after she received her second nomination for the 2025 Clima Africa Awards slated for October in South Africa. Last year she won the Africa Female Gospel Artiste of the Year award in her debut nomination at the prestigious awards.

Speaking on the sideline about the donation from Chivayo, Moyo said to her it’s a blessing that she is grateful for, which is why she is also helping others by passing on the showers of blessings.

“I had bought a similar white Toyota Fortuner last year, so I now have two. But I really thank Sir Wicknell for the great gesture. It’s a timely blessing that I have decided to also share with others through my DM Foundation. It always feels great to be recognized, especially in such a huge way,” said Moyo.
