It was business as usual at Sakubva Produce Market yesterday (Friday) regardless of calls for social distancing and self isolation which threatens the spread of the coronavirus.

AS of yesterday (Friday) Mutare has not recorded any confirmed case of coronavirus, but President Emmerson Mnangagwa yesterday in his State address confirmed that so far five cases have been recorded in the country, one in Victora Falls and four in Harare. Only one death has so far been recorded, that of 30 year old broadcaster Zororo Makamba who passed away on Monday.
Regardless of loud calls and ‘subtle’ awareness measures effected by Government since the first case of Coronavirus was confirmed, the majority of the populace has been taking the pandemic casually, especially those in urban settings, and in Mutare this was evidently the case throughout the week even after news of the first death case broke on Monday.

Business as usual on Wednesday as people were crowded at downtown shops in Mutare and not observing social distancing.

Hygiene concerns at food markets should be prioritized in the wake of COVID-19, especially where people do not use protective clothing.
